London Session
The London session runs approximately 3:00 AM to 9:30 AM ET and is the highest-volume period of the overnight session for US equity index futures. It often sets the directional bias heading into the RTH open and produces the day's most important pre-market levels.
The London session (also called the European session) runs from approximately 3:00 AM ET to 9:30 AM ET, corresponding to the active hours of the London Stock Exchange and major European financial centers. It is the most important segment of the overnight session for US equity index futures traders.
London session hours
| Market | Local time | ET equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| London (GMT/BST) | 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM | 3:00 AM – 11:30 AM ET |
| Frankfurt (CET/CEST) | 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM | 3:00 AM – 11:30 AM ET |
The 3:00–9:30 AM ET window is the relevant overlap for US futures traders. After the RTH open, the London and US sessions overlap until approximately 11:30 AM ET.
Why London matters for futures traders
Volume surge: as London opens, futures volume increases sharply from Asia session lows. European institutions and banks begin positioning in US index futures, particularly as they hedge or express views on US equities.
Directional moves: the London session frequently initiates the move that defines the day’s pre-market range. If ES was flat overnight in Asia and then trends 15 points higher from 3:00–9:30 AM ET, that London trend sets up key reference levels for RTH.
Economic data: major European data releases (ECB decisions, UK CPI, Eurozone PMI) occur during London hours and can move US index futures meaningfully.
Key London levels for RTH planning
- London high: often tested as resistance in early RTH if price has rallied overnight
- London low: often tested as support if price has sold off overnight
- London open price (~3:00 AM ET): a significant reference point; price that holds above London open is broadly bullish context for RTH
London–RTH overlap (9:30 AM – ~11:30 AM ET)
The first two hours of RTH are also the tail end of London activity. This is one reason the RTH open is the most volatile and liquid period of the day: you have both US and European participants simultaneously active.
